Thomas Dale Cox of Murphysboro

Thomas Dale Cox, 85, passed away Thursday evening, May 3, 2018, at his residence in Murphysboro.

Tom was born Dec, 20,1932, in Carterville, a son to the late Russell Irvin and Ruth (Bush) Cox.

He was united in marriage to Arletta Joan Phemister May 20, 1949, in Carbondale. They shared more than 68 years of marriage.

Tom is survived by his wife, Arletta of Murphysboro; his children, Lyn Dale and wife Joan Cox of Murphysboro and daughter Linda Stayton of Newman, Colo.; grandchildren Michael Cox of Tampa, Fla., A J. and wife Ashley Nicole Burkey of Murphysboro, and Ashlee Joy Burkey of Carbondale; and great-grandchildren Gracee, Kamah and Kree.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Ruth Cox; and two grandsons, Jeffrey Cox and Tommy Joe Burkey.

In 1973, Tom started Cox Trucking and Boat Hauling in Murphysboro. He enjoyed boating and traveling, but most of all he loved being with his family and friends. He will be dearly missed by all.

A celebration of his life will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 12 at the Murpysboro American Legion.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name to the Gen. John A. Logan Museum, 1613 Edith St., Murphysboro, Ill., 62966.
