Victor Maurice 'Vic' Newlin of Elizabethtown
Victor Maurice "Vic" Newlin, 91, of rural Elizabethtown, passed away on Sunday, March 18, 2018, at the Harrisburg Medical Center in Harrisburg.
He was born on Nov. 18, 1926, in Yale, the son of the late Charles E. and Velva Ine (Lambert) Newlin. Vic married Retha J. Colvin on Oct. 6, 1946, in Sedan, Kansas.
He was a proud World War II Army veteran and a member of Shawneetown American Legion Post 585.
Vic was an avid elk, deer, and fowl hunter; ocean and fresh fisherman; and loved to mow grass with his John Deeres. He spent 22 years known as "Gabby" at Peabody Coal, owned and operated Newlin's Grocery and Gas Station near Sparks Hill and also worked in excavating and farming. Vic was a member of the Social Brethren Church.
He is survived by his loving wife, Retha Newlin of Elizabethtown; five children, Marilyn and James Pum of Burlington, Wis., Leonard and Jan Newlin of Spring Valley, Charles R. Newlin of Freeburg, Susan E. Newlin of Elizabethtown, Carol McCarty of Ridgway; three sisters, Tabitha L. Stivers of Casey, Imogene Huddleston of Greenup, and Dorothy Wilson of Westmont; eighteen grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; three-great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Vic is preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Robert "Nature Boy" and Thomas Newlin; two sisters, Mary Eleanor Cutright and Mildred Sidenbender; two brothers, Glen E. and Ronald Newlin; one granddaughter, Marla Rider.
Visitation for Vic will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 21, at the Vickery Funeral Chapel in Equality. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 22, with the Rev. James R. Hubbard officiating. Burial will be at the Lane-Winters Cemetery near Cave-In-Rock with military rites.
