Dr. Grover Gene Sloan, of Harrisburg

HARRISBURG - Dr. Grover Gene Sloan passed away at 6:50 p.m. Monday, Feb. 12, 2018, surrounded by his family and several friends at Carrier Mills Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

He was born Nov. 3, 1929, in Galatia to Grover and Nova (Durham) Sloan.

Dr. Sloan graduated from Galatia High School in 1946 and went on to attend Southern Illinois University Carbondale, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1949. He then entered medical school at the University of Illinois at Chicago, from which he graduated in 1954.

He was a captain in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Polk, Louisiana. Shortly after his time in the military he returned to southern Illinois, where he opened his medical practice in Carrier Mills. He began treating patients in 1957 and continued to do so over the next 48 years.

Dr. Sloan volunteered his services for many years on the Saline County Tuberculosis Board and Egyptian Health Department Board. He served on the Prep and Investment committees of the Illinois State Medical Society and on the Board of Governors of the Illinois State Medical Insurance Exchange.

He served on the Saline-Pope-Hardin Medical Society and was a member of the American Academy of Family Practitioners. He also served on Carrier Mills School Board in the late 1950s, and on Southeastern Illinois College board of trustees.

Dr. Sloan retired from medical practice in 2005. He and his wife, Betty, enjoyed traveling both before and after his retirement. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and taking his beloved Ladybug for walks whenever he had the opportunity.

He was loved by so many and will be greatly missed.

Survivors include four children, Stephen (Tina Robison) Sloan of Galatia, Elizabeth (Bob Nick) Sloan of Chicago, Warren (Patty Bartolotta) Sloan of Oak Lawn and Auna (Alan) Waller of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Grover and Nova Sloan; wife, Betty Stout-Sloan; former wife, Jean Marie Heebner-Sloan; brothers, Bluford, Roswell and Charles Sloan; sisters, Margaret Jones, Sallie Adams, Ruth Girot and Beulah Bond; sons, Dr. Bruce Sloan, D.D.S., and Ashley Sloan; and grandson, Aaron Waller.

In the words of the family, "The Sloan family would like to thank the entire staff at Carrier Mills Nursing Rehab facility for the loving care given to our father and the kindness shown to our family."

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, in Sloan Funeral Home, 110 State St., in Galatia with Mark Cockrum officiating. Visitation will be from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

In accordance with Dr. Sloan's wishes, he will be cremated. Burial will be at a later date in Durham Cemetery in Galatia.
