Ruebena 'Lady' Spottsville Newsom, formerly of Shawneetown
SHAWNEETOWN - Ruebena "Lady" Spottsville Newsom, 101, of Grand Blanc, Michigan, formerly of Shawneetown, died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2018, in Grand Blanc.
Graveside services will be at noon Saturday, Feb. 3, in Lakeview Cemetery in Carrier Mills with the Rev. Ownly Williams and the Rev. Jack Hall officiating. There will be no visitation. All friends should go directly to the cemetery.
She was born July 13, 1916, in Old Shawneetown, the third of eight children of Ulysses G. and Minnie (Boone) Spottsville.
Ruebena was a resident of Shawneetown for 99 years. She moved to Michigan in January 2015 after a brief illness.
She was married to Ivory Newsom, and from this union Venson (Marilynn) and Garrison (Vera) were born. She also raised her nephew, Bobby (Barbara) Spottsville, as her own son.
Ruebena was affectionately called "Lady" by her family and friends and "Madam" by her sons. All of her grandchildren lovingly called her "Grandlady".
She was an active member of First Baptist Church, where she was always excited about her Sunday school class. She was a Bible scholar and loved to read.
Lady was an avid gardener up to her 99th birthday. She would garden, then harvest the fruits and vegetables and can them.
She was well known for her seedless blackberry jam, canned tomatoes and okra. She would feed everyone who came to visit her.
Lady loved to crochet and knit. She also loved to quote poetry. Lady was a great family historian.
Left to cherish her memory are her sister-in-law, Estelle Spottsville of Flint, Michigan; stepson, Eligah Newsom of South Bend, Indiana; son, Garrison (Vera) of Munster, Indiana; daughter-in-law, Marilynn of Grand Blanc, Michigan; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The family would like to express special thanks to Heart To Heart Hospice, her First Baptist Church family, her Grace Emmanuel Baptist Church family and her loving family who cared for her.
