Obituary for John Butler
JOHN GIBSON BUTLER, 69, of Chester, Illinois, passed away <span class="aBn"><span class="aQJ">Friday, July 1, 2016</span></span> at his residence.
He was born to the late Robert Gibson and Mary Virginia (nee: Duvall) Butler on July 3, 1946 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
He married Donella K. Snyder on December 27, 1970 in Mt. Carmel, Illinois. She survives.
John worked as a guidance counselor and coach for Chester Community School District #139 and retired in 2005. He coached girls basketball and girls softball and is the winningest coach in Chester history in both sports.
He also coached golf and boys basketball.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Chester. He was a member of the Elks Club for 50 years, life member of the VFW Post #3553, member of the American Legion Post #487, Eagles Club Aerie #3252, and Chester Country Club.
He was a Vietnam Veteran, serving proudly in the U.S. Army with the 199th LIB.
Survivors - wife Donella Butler, Chester; one son, Bradley Gibson (Sara) Butler, Overland Park, Kan.; one brother, Carl "Tom" (Ann) Butler, Louisville, Ky.; one grandson, Bennett Gibson Butler; cousins and friends.
Preceded in death by: Parents.
Funeral Service <span class="aBn"><span class="aQJ">10 a.m. </span></span><span class="aBn"><span class="aQJ">Wednesday, July 6, 2016</span></span> at First Presbyterian Church, Chester, with Rev. Roger Reid officiating.
Interment <span class="aBn"><span class="aQJ">Wednesday</span></span>, <span class="aBn"><span class="aQJ">2:30 p..m. </span></span>Graveside service at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, Mo.
Visitation will be Tuesday, <span class="aBn"><span class="aQJ">5 p.m. - 8 p.m.</span></span> at Pechacek-McClure Funeral Home, Chester, and <span class="aBn"><span class="aQJ">Wednesday</span></span>, <span class="aBn"><span class="aQJ">9 a.m. - 10 a.m.</span></span> at First Presbyterian Church, Chester.
Memorials can be made to First Presbyterian Church, Chester, and Charlie Hodges Memorial Golf Scholarship.
Elks Memorial to a Departed Brother Service will be held <span class="aBn"><span class="aQJ">Tuesday</span></span>, at 7<span class="aBn"><span class="aQJ"> p.m</span></span>.
