Hugh D. Malan
Hugh D. Malan, age 100, of Pinckneyville, Ill., passed away on Sunday, May 18, 2014 at 6:08 p.m.
Hugh was born on May 16, 1914 in Pinckneyville, Ill., a son of Wilfred C. and Cora B. (DeVinny) Malan. On Nov. 24, 1939, he married Ruth M. Roach in La Crosse, Kans. and she preceded him in death on Sept. 17, 2006. For 40 years Hugh was dedicated to education as a teacher and then superintendent of Pinckneyville School District #50. The Junior High campus is named in his honor. He and his father raised beef cattle for more than 50 years. He was a life-long member of the First United Presbyterian Church, Pinckneyville, Ill., where he served as elder, deacon, trustee, church treasurer, Sunday school teacher and choir member. He was also the treasurer of the Galum Presbyterian Cemetery for many years. Hugh held the honor for scoring the first touchdown for the newly formed Pinckneyville Panther football team in the 1930s. Hugh delivered Meals on Wheels and was a Pinckneyville Rotary Club member. Hugh loved to travel, having visited 49 states and Canada.
Survivors include two sons, Stephen (Susan) Malan of The Villages, Fla. and Mark (Judy) Malan of West Peoria, Ill.; three grandchildren, Natalie (Rob) Colp, Catherine (Pat) Moore and Douglas (Allison) Malan; three great grandchildren, Kallie Mathis, Alexander Malan and Lucas Malan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and one sister in infancy.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
