George D. Alvis

George D. Alvis, 86, of Du Quoin, passed away at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at the Fairview Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Du Quoin.

George had been owner and operator of Alvis Septic Service for 21 years. He had also worked for Alvis Trash Service, was a auctioneer and factory worker. George had been the Du Quoin City Health Officer and he had worked at the Perry County Landfill. He was a member of the Second Baptist Church in Du Quoin. George had been a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a lifetime member of the Du Quoin American Legion. George loved fishing, woodworking, going to church and fixing lawn mowers.

He was born Aug. 7, 1927 at Du Quoin, Ill., the son of George A. and Sara Jane (Napier) Alvis.

He married Louise B. Archonie on Dec. 31, 1949 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Du Quoin and she survives.

He is survived by his wife of Du Quoin, six children - Cynthia Alvis of California, George D. Alvis Jr. of Arkansas, Johnny Alvis and wife Sonja of Elkville, Linda Davison and husband Jeff of Dowell, David Alvis and wife Tami of Du Quoin and Mike Alvis of Du Quoin, one brother - Phillip Lamar Alvis and wife Delores of Du Quoin, four sisters - Peggy Alvis of Du Quoin, Louise Milam and husband Bruce of Du Quoin, Janice Rendleman and husband Donald of Murphysboro and Joan Van Zandt of Du Quoin, 12 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister - Marilyn Siefert and her husband Charles.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 21, 2014 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Rev. Kent Eaton officiating.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. until the time of service on Friday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.

Burial will be in the Sunset Memorial Park at Du Quoin.

Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Du Quoin V.F.W. and American Legion and the Army National Guard.

Friends may make memorials to the Alzheimer's Association or to Cancer Research and will be accepted at the funeral home.
