</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[Helen Ann Atchison, 87, of Chester, IL, died September 28, 2009, at St. Ann's Healthcare Center, Chester, IL.

The daughter of Herbert E. and Florence (Murray) Smith, she was born June 13, 1922 in Indianola, IL.

On February 9, 1942, she married Thomas Everett Atchison in Mobile, AL, and he preceded her in death in 1981.

Helen was a homemaker and of the Baptist Faith. She was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary Post #3553, Chester; American Legion Auxiliary Post #487, Chester; D.A.R. (Daughters of the American Revolution); and the Chester Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She was an avid gardener, reader, and embroider.

Survivors include three daughters-Tammy (Rick) Kirkover of Chester, IL, Rhonda (Jerry) Sternberg of Chester, IL, and Kathy (Jim) Pinkerton of Trenton, IL; one brother, Herbert E. (Bette) Smith Jr. of Hoopeston, IL; two sisters-in-law: Luella Atchison of Chester, IL and Eleanor Adkisson of Champaign, IL; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Thomas Atchison; second husband, Wayne Bergfeld; stillborn daughter, Cynthia Lea Atchison; one brother, Merle Smith; and one sister, Marie Largent.

Funeral services were held Friday, October 2, 2009, at Pechacek-McClure Funeral Home, Chester, IL with Rev. Cecil Dunning officiating. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery, Chester, IL.
