Arthur Glen McCormick
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[Arthur Glen McCormick, 70, of Glen Carbon, Ill., born May 31, 1939 in Pinckneyville, died peacefully on Sunday, Aug. 2, 2009 after a battle with cancer.
Art was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred "Ray" and Bertie, nee Stone and his sister, Helen Dunkirk.
Surviving are his wife, Beverly nee Smith, whom he married on Aug. 2, 1961; daughters, Connie Lynn (Troy) Clendenin of Rockwood, Ill. and their children, Jordan, Joel and Rachel and Debra Anne (Chris) Drake of Edwardsville, Ill. and their children Isabelle and William and his brother Darius McCormick and nice Sue Rae McCormick, both of Pinckneyville.
Art graduated from Pinckneyville Community High School in 1957 and Illinois College in Jacksonville, Ill. in 1961. Later, he earned a Masters degree from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in Education Psychology and Guidance. He began his career in education as a teacher/coach in 1961 at Pinckneyville Junior High and continued as a principal at Wheatley Elementary in Du Quoin in 1968. He served a four-year elected term as Perry County Regional Superintendent, following with school Superintendencies at Iuka CCSD, Oblong CUSD, Porta CUSDin Petersburg and Mt. Olive CUSD. He retired from education in 1996 completing 35 years.
Art was ordained a deacon at Pinckneyville First Baptist Church and subsequently served as a deacon at First Baptist Churches in Du Quoin, Salem, Oblong, Petersburg, O'Fallon and Chatham Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Mitchell Masonic Lodge in Pinckneyville.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Siteman Cancer Center in St. Louis, Mo. or the Christian Activity Center in East St. Louis, Ill.
Friends were able to call between 5 and 8 p.m. at Irwin Chapel, 591 Glen Crossing Road, Glen Carbon, Ill. on Wednesday, August 5 and between 10 and 11:45 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 6 at Pinckneyville First Baptist Church. Funeral services were held at the church with Dr. Don Mayberry officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Du Quoin.
