Perry County Goes Green With Recycling Center

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[ The recycling drop-off facility will largely resemble the City of Du Quoin's recycling program which has experience much success.

Acceptable recyclables that will be received at the county site will include clear, brown or green glass, aluminum and tin cans, plastic bottles, jugs, plastics #1 and #2, newspaper, cardboard and white and colored paper.

While the county will accept newspaper, the public will be encouraged to continue dropping newspapers off at the St. Bruno's and 204 School drop points. The county site will be designed as a drive-thru facility and will be open 24 hours a day all week. The facility will have security lighting and be fully monitored with cameras. Recycled materials will be trucked to the Southern Recycling Center in Carbondale. A beginning date for the site is yet to be determined.

The grant application was a joint effort between the county's Department of Planning and Development and the Highway Department. The collection site will be operated by the County's Solid Waste Officer.

The solid waste officer, Becky Tracy, also reported at the meeting on the Solid Waste Department's plans for the new year.

The Solid Waste Department plans to clean several of the open dumping roads across the county and, with the aid of the Highway Department, put up new no dumping signs that also state the fines involved in illegal dumping.

New laws to take effect in 2012 will not allow computer parts to be disposed of in landfills. The County is working on making an e-scrap point available by that time.
