Mater Dei Wins Soph Thriller

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[ The Du Quoin High School Junior Varsity Football team is 4-4 following Monday's hard-fought 14-7 loss against Breese Mater Dei at Van Metre Field.

DHS will end its underclass season next Monday at home versus Murphysboro. Breese Mater Dei, added to the schedule after Sparta cancelled its sophomore season, finishes 7-1.

Karson Hoffman ran 16 yards for the lone Du Quoin touchdown late in the first quarter. Brandon George booted the point-after touchdown.

Mater Dei broke through on a 15-yard pass play midway through the third period, but missed its PAT kick.

The young Indians held a 7-6 advantage until just 75 seconds were left to play, when Mater Dei won the game on a 22-yard pass.

Jerrill Holmes topped Du Quoin with 76 yards rushing. Bigham added 35 yards and Hoffman 28.

Bigham threw for 71 more yards. Brandon Williams (23 yards), Hoffman (21 yards), Storm Clarry (16 yards) and Chaz Bland (11 years) were leading receivers.

Defensively, Bland recorded 13 tackles. Brock Morgenstern added nine with Luchie Porter, Kenny Kabat and Clarry all contributing seven stops.
