CHS Lady Jackets Volleyball wins five-of-last seven matches
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[The Chester High School Lady Yellow Jackets Volleyball team has come alive as of late achieving success in both conference and non-conference action. After winning the last two matches in the Trico Tournament Sept. 23-26, the Jackets continued their success with a great win over Steeleville Sept. 29.
The next night at Nashville, Sept. 30, CHS lost to conference rival, the Nashville Hornettes, but bounced right back Thursday, Oct. 2 to sweep SIRR opponent DuQuoin for the 2008 season with a victory.
Sparta proved to be too much for the Jackets Tuesday, Oct. 7 as Chester lost another SIRR match to the Lady Bulldogs; however Thursday, Oct. 9 the Jackets beat Anna-Jonesboro in front of a very excited crowd in Juergen's Gym to improve to 3-4 in the conference race and 9-13 overall.
Against Steeleville the Jackets won in two quick games, 25-11 and 25-21. Kellie Bert and Jamie Chambers led the Jackets with 12 service points apiece. Bert also recorded four aces to pace the Jackets. Amy Tressler headed the kill category with four while Staci Jany led the Yellow Jackets in assists with four. Jamie Chambers had eight digs to lead Chester while Megan Atchison followed with seven. With the win Chester improved to 7-11 overall.
The JV also won big at Steeleville with a pair of wins, 25-11 and 25-21. Jamie Chambers led the Jackets in service points with 10 while Amy Araiza and Ashley Helmers helped out big time with eight service points apiece.
Brittany Schroeder had four kills for the Lady Jackets and Ashley Helmers came out big for the Jackets with a trio of aces. Amy Araiza led the team in digs with 10. The freshmen lost in two games, 15-21 and 16-21.
At Nashville Sept. 30 it was hard for the much smaller Yellow Jackets to stand up to the bigger, more powerful Hornettes. Chester lost in two games, 19-25 and 17-25 falling to 7-12 overall and 1-3 in the SIRR.
Kellie Bert paced the Jackets with seven service points and Tiffani Marshall added three kills. Marshall also played huge at the net with seven blocks and Staci Jany came up with three assists. Jany also led the team in digs with six while Megan Atchison added five.
The JV also lost in two games, 11-25 and 15-25. Amy Araiza led the team in scoring with eight points served. The freshmen lost 18-21 and 13-21.
Chester did not stay down for long, however, as they came right back and defeated DuQuoin Thurs-day, Oct. 2 to improve to 8-12 overall and 2-3 in the SIRR Conference race. It did take the Jackets three games to accomplish the task, however. Chester won the first game 25-10, and then lost a close one, 22-25 before wining the tie-breaker, 25-15 which earned them the match title.
Megan Atchison was a monster scorer for CHS with 22 points served. Three other Lady Yellow Jackets scored in double figures. Missy Lyons and Kellie Bert each scored 12 points apiece and Staci Jany notched 11. Shelly Lyons served nine while Jamie Chambers recorded six.
Tiffani Marshall led the team in blocks with three. Devon Hecht continued to improve at the net with her aggressive slams with four kills to pace the team. Missy Lyons, Megan Atchison and Kellie Bert each added three aces apiece. Staci Jany paced the team in assists with eight. Jamie Chambers led the team in digs with 18. Missy Lyons added 13 while Megan Atchison had nine.
In the JV contest Chester lost, but it took DuQuoin three games to take out the Yellow Jackets. The freshmen lost in three also, 21-19, 7-21 and 6-15.
Chester came home the week of Oct. 6-10 and hosted a pair of conference games. Tuesday, Oct. 7 the Jackets hosted Sparta in Colbert Gym. The bigger and more aggressive Bulldogs won decisively in only two games, 16-25 and 15-25. With the loss, Chester fell to 8-13 overall and 2-4 in the SIRR Mississippi Division.
Tiffani Marshall was big for CHS with 11 blocks. Amy Tressler and Missy Lyons led the team in kills with three apiece. The Jackets did not score a lot of points from service. Missy Lyons and Jamie Chambers led the team with only three apiece. Staci Jany paced the Jackets with eight digs.
The JV won against Sparta in three games, 26-24, 22-25 and 25-18. Shelly Lyons paced the Jackets with 12 points served. She also led in kills with five. Tiffani Marshall had three blocks to pace the jackets at the net and both Jamie Chambers and Shelly Lyons had four aces apiece for the Jackets.
Lyons also added seven assists as did Taylor Crum. Brittany Schroeder led the team in digs with nine while Jamie Chambers added eight, Amy Araiza had seven and Shelly Lyons had six. The freshmen lost, but it took Sparta three games to eliminate CHS, 14-21, 21-12 and 13-15.
Thursday, Oct. 9 the Anna-Jonesboro Wildcats came to town looking for a win in the SIRR Mississippi Division of the conference. Colbert Gym was occupied, so the volleyball matches for the night were forced to move to Juergen's Gym. The atmosphere was fantastic in Juergen's as the fans were right upon the action and the volleyball crowd packed the place. The Jackets responded favorable by treating Jacket Country to yet another conference victory in dramatic fashion. Chester won the match, 25-23, 17-25 and 26-24.
Missy Lyons and Megan Atchison led the team in points scored with nine apiece. Rachel Young and Amy Araiza also stepped up and added six each. Missy Lyons and Amy Tressler each came up with four kills apiece. For the third match in-a-row Tiffani Marshall was huge at the net with 11 blocks. Devon Hecht did her part too with seven blocks.
Missy Lyons led the team in aces with three and in assists with five. Staci Jany and Megan Atchison each did their part by giving four assists apiece. Lyons completed an otherwise most excellent night by throwing in 18 digs to keep the Jackets honest and alive throughout the contest.
With the win, Chester improved to 9-13 overall and 3-4 in the SIRR conference. The JV also won, 25-19 and 25-16, sending the Wildcat fans home with their tails between their legs. Unfortunately the freshmen could not complete the sweep. They lost 8-21 and 18-21.
