Du Quoin Extends Battle of The Beaucoup Win Streak to 26
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"> Last year's Perry County Shootout wasn't decided until the final gun.
Friday night-when Du Quoin and Pinckneyville met for the 78th time-the
final outcome was never in doubt.
In fact, what turned out to be the winning touchdown came just four
plays into the contest.
The state-ranked Indians rolled 72 yards in just over a minute‹66
seconds to be exact‹and raced ahead 7-0 before most of the overflow crowd
circling Quillman Field had time to get settled.
Du Quoin's 42-6 victory included offensive touchdowns from five
different players and a sixth by the defense. The Tribe, methodically
rolling up 327 yards, improved to 4-1.
The Indians are 2-0 in River-to-River Conference, Mississippi Division
play. Next Friday, they'll host Nashville (2-3, 1-1).
Pinckneyville remained winless, dipping to 0-5 and 0-2 entering its trip
to Sparta (0-5, 0-2).
"I really felt like we executed well in all aspects of our game,"
Indians coach Al Martin said. "Offensively, defensively and with the special
teams we were able to put together very good efforts."
Jamor Reed 's 59 yard dash on the first play from scrimmage set the
early tone. Two plays later, A.J. Hill scored on a four-yard run.
Nick Baskin's extra point put the Indians in front 7-0 with 10:54 left.
Barely 3 1/2 minutes later, Du Quoin scored again. The first of two
five-yard TD runs by junior David Gayton pushed the score to 13-0. Baskin
again kicked the PAT.
Du Quoin's defense then took over, sacking quarterback Nathan Morton on
Colin Jones' bull rush. On the very next play, Matt Gossett picked off a
Morton pass and ran untouched for a 25-yard touchdown. After Baskin's boot,
the score was 21-0 just 6:15 into the game.
Gayton scored again on the second play of the second period as the
margin grew to 35-0. Ben Conner's 2-yard blast and an 18-yard toss from Hill
to Marcus Clarry‹along with kicks from Baskin‹pushed the Tribe ahead 42-0 by
intermission.
Pinckneyville was held to just four net yards and no first downs in the
half.
Morton broke free on a 49-yard run midway through the fourth period to
complete the scoring.
"When a team the quality of Du Quoin has it going with their offense, defense and special teams they are going to be a load for anyone to handle," Panthers coach Tod Rushing said.
"They had us pinned back in such poor field position all night long and it really just started to snowball pretty quick."
Pinckneyville didn't start an offensive drive past its 2o-yard line until late in the contest.
Senior Blake Hester led Du Quoin with 79 yards rushing on eight carries.
Reed added 66 yards and Gayton 45.
Hill completed seven passes for 75 yards in two quarters of work.
Gossett (3-for-4, 18 yards) finished up. Seven different Indians caught
passes with Cody Youngman, David Rose and Clarry all recording two catches.
Morton (86 yards rush) accounted for all but nine of Pinckneyville's
offensive total. He didn't complete a pass.
Defensively, Gossett and Evon Stollhans each had four stops for the
Tribe.
Friday's game was the 250th in Martin's 21 years at Du Quoin. He's now
207-43 and ranks among the 40 most winning coaches in state history,
according to the Illinois High School Association (IHSA).
Only 13 coaches currently active have more victories.
Du Quoin has now won 26 straight games over Pinckneyville, dating all the
