Perry County Election Judges Back in the Classroom

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[ With the November election less than two months away, over 200 Perry County Election Judges will be brushing up on Illinois election rules next week, County Clerk Kevin Kern said today.

Judges are required to attend a refresher course every two years to stay abreast of Election Day procedures and changes in the law.

Four election judge schools are taking place next week. They will be held at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Monday, September 22 at the Lion‚s Den in Pinckneyville and at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Wednesday, September 24 at City Hall in Du Quoin. Judges may attend any of the four sessions.

Kern and personnel from the State Board of Elections will lead the sessions. Judges will review proper polling place procedures before, during and after voting hours. There will also be review of voting eligibility and recent changes in state and federal law.

Judges will also be reviewing procedures for Perry County‚s optical scan and touch-screen balloting systems.

"Election judges are a vital part of our elections process,‰ Kern said. „They work hard and endure a long day to ensure our democracy works."

Illinois County Clerks successfully pushed for a change in state law that will increase the salaries of election by $20 thanks to a state stipend.
