O'Neal First-Time UMP Winner
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[ The United Midwest Promoters (UMP) Modifieds ran the 15th Annual Best Western-Bill Oldani 20-mile event prior to Monday's ARCA race.
Jon O'Neal, Jr. of Platte City, Mo. was first to the checkered flag, taking the lead for good with five laps remaining.
Sliding past Robinson's Jesse Snyder in turn four, O'Neal became the 10th winner in Oldani history.
Three-time winner Brian Shaw started from the palongside Jackson, Tennessee's driver Jonathan Rowan. Shaw and Rowan won UMP qualifying heat Sunday night.
Rowan led the first two laps before handling woes sent Curt Rhodes of Taylorville into the first. Snyder took over on the fifth lap and led until O'Neal's pass.
Snyder took second, with Emmett Groves of Charleston, Missouri third, Rhodes fourth and Du Quoin's Tim Burdel ended fifth.
Three other local drivers-Blake Cook and Chris Winters, along with Pinckneyville's Doug Higgerson-also competed in the feature event.
Higgerson was seventh with Winters 11th and Cook 13th.
Five caution flags and one red flag slowed tthings.
Marion's Jeff Parks, the defending champ, lost an engine during practice.
