The American Trapshooting Association's most popular competition opened August 6 and runs through August 16.
This is the 109th Grand American with the event held in Vandalia, Ohio for 75 years before relocating to its present location in Randolph County. In addition to the competition, three shooters will be inducted into the ATA Hall of Fame.
Trapshooting is a specific form of clay target shooting and a game of movement, action, and split-second timing. It requires the accuracy and skill to repeatedly aim, fire, and break a four and one-fourth inch disc, which is hurled through the air at a speed of 41 miles per hour, simulating the flight path of a bird fleeing a hunter.
With more than 7,000 shooters and tens of thousands of spectators expected, the WSRC has a more finished look to it than in the past. Grasses have been reseeded making thicker fields, more shade has been provided, and boat docks have been completed. The WSRC has a 1,000-unit campground to accommodate guests.
The 1,600-acre facility provides some of the best shooting in the nation.
A new traffic policy has been put in place at the complex this year. Signs have been posted to assist motorists.
Campers and motor homes are asked to continue their entrance procedures by traveling around the complex and entering at the South Entrance near the check in point.
All other traffic will be two-way on County Road 18. Drivers may enter and exit at any gate on the property, day or night.
Four bands will perform at free concerts at the complex during the Grand American. They are Jackson Junction (Aug. 9); Crusin' (Aug. 11); Overboard (Aug. 13); and Hobbs on Vacation (Aug. 15). The shows are being sponsored by the city, ATA, and the 17th Street Bar & Grill, and are not just for the shooters. The public is invited, according to Sparta Mayor Rob Link.
The performances will be held to the north of the Events Center from 6:30-10:30 p.m.
