The 3 Stooges 3 Man Scramble & the Popeye & Olive Oyl Mixed Scramble were held on July 12th-13th & July 26th-27th respectively. The 3 Stooges event was packed out at 144 golfers from all over the bi-state region. On Saturday afternoon, heavy thunderstorms brought an end to the action for the day and the back nine was washed out. Sunday's weather was perfect and much of the golf was also. Brian Kolmer of Mt. Vernon, Ron Middleton of Nashville and Justin Beaston of Red Bud won by 2 strokes with a 2 day (27 hole) total of 88. Quint Stencil and Matt Wegener of Red Bud, and Jeff Riebling of Columbia took 2nd with a score of 90. Two hometown teams, Patrick Miller, Phillip Miller, and Brian McDonough, and Bill Koeneman, Mark Beare, and Jason Buskohl took 3rd & 4th with scores of 91 & 92. In A Flight, the Chester team of Neal McDonough, Ronnie (Boom Boom) Wagner, and Lee Agne took 1st place with a score of 95. They edged out the Red Bud team of Louie & Blake Diewald & Scott Liefer by 1 stroke. B Flight winners were Mike Link, John Mayo and John Major of Belleville with a 91. Four strokes back were the tournament's "Official 3 Stooges" - Steve, Ron and Don Kaiping from Waterloo. The CHS Class of '75 team of Steve Higgerson, J.W. Best and Mitch Eggemeyer finished 3rd with a 96 total. C Flight was won by Jim Burnett and John Wondel of Jackson, MO and Toby Zoellner of Perryville with a 100, edging out John and Joe Choate and Gabe Shepard by 1 stroke.
The Popeye & Olive Oyl Mixed Scramble had a field of 126 golfers from as far away as Rolla, MO and Iowa. Many teams that had not been to Chester for several years were here and found many changes with not only a new clubhouse, but the course is in the best shape since it opened in the late '60's. Several of them commented that CCC is as good a course as they play most of the year. CCC member and Ellis Grove native Mark Beare has paired up with Meredith Mosel of Carbondale for the last two years, winning both years. This year's 2-day total of 120 (56-64) was 6 strokes better than the 2nd place team, CCC members Brad and Megan Dunker of Waterloo. Megan and Meredith are sisters. Third place was CCC members and tournament Chairpersons - Dennis and Linda Gibbs from Steeleville with a 129 total. A Flight winners were Pat and Gayle Gorham from Jackson, MO with a 137 score. In a 2-way tie for 2nd at 138 were the teams of Chuck and Pam Richardet from Perryville and Les and Brenda Oyler of Harrisburg. The hometown team of John Butler and Annette Draves won B Flight with a score of 141. There was a 3-way tie for 2nd at 143 with Jeff and Samantha Arbeiter of Murphysboro, Tom and Linda Shields of Rockwood, and Larry and Barb Elms of Highland. CCC member Paul Zemlyn and Maxine Goetting of Steeleville ended up in a tie with Bill Summers and Marcia Morgan of Swansea in C Flight, both carding 146. Charlie and Teri Fox of Smithton tied Gary and Laura Hollman from Jacob for 3rd place at 148. D Flight was decided by two CCC member teams with Kevin and Mary Jo Homan winning by 2 strokes over Ron and Cindy Wagner, 151 to 153. E Flight ended in a 1st place tie between John and Carol Cookson of Belleville and Bob and Rose Sturgeon of Columbia at 158.
