Police Chase Ends in Anti-Climatic Tragedy

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[ On a citizen's report around 8 p.m Friday Night of a vehicle speeding down Route 14, Du Quoin Police Officer Eric McRoy and Sheriff's Department Officer John Hopkins attempted to intercept the vehicle driven by Daniel Morgan, 36, from Herrin, on Main Street in Du Quoin with a traffic stop after running the plates and finding his registration expired. Morgan did not stop and proceeded to speed over 100 miles per hour west down Route 152. At the intersection of 13 and 152, Morgan turned north toward Pinckneyville and Sheriff's Department Officer Mike Schnider joined the chase. Morgan continued to speed north on 13 through Pinckneyville until he came to a stop due to a partial road block. Upon exiting the vehicle, Morgan had failed to put his vehicle into the proper gear and it unintentionally rolled forward hitting Hopkins' car.

Morgan was arrested for driving under the influence, aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude, no valid driver's license, no valid registration, illegal transportation of alcohol, speeding, disobeying a traffic control device, failure to wear a seatbelt and operating an uninsured vehicle.
