A Carbondale man pleaded guilty to a home invasion charge in December, and was formally sentenced in Jackson County Court on Wednesday, according to Jackson County State’s Attorney Michael Carr on Thursday.
Shahere Lark, 20, was sentenced to eight years in prison for the charge of home invasion, a Class X felony.
Carr said on July 9, officers from the Carbondale Police Department responded to a report of a home invasion at an apartment on East College Street. The victim reported he was asleep in his living room when he awoke to see a black male standing in his doorway.
The victim began yelling at the suspect to leave when another man came down the stairs, holding a handgun and pointing it at the victim. The second man demanded the victim’s wallet. The two men then ran from the residence after taking $20 from the wallet. Carr said the handgun was later determined to be a BB gun.
Second Act is a free program for adults age 50 and older, and is open to anybody in Southern Illinois, according to Kern, manager of the program. She said the program does health education, activity-based classes, and several day-trips each year to surrounding destinations.
