Shooting victim a father ‘trying to turn his life around’

Deaunta R. Spencer died Sept. 14 after a dispute at a residence on the north east of Carbondale. Though he was born in Carbondale, the 20-year-old was from Byltheville, Ark., and is being remembered as a young man ready to take a new lease on life. He likely was killed with a pistol stolen from Carbondale’s chief of police.

Rutherford event Sept. 13 a chance to shake hands, find cash

Illinois Treasurer Dan Rutherford will hold a community networking event from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. next Tuesday, Sept. 13 at the SIU Student Center — and many attendees could walk away with more cash than they came in with. The event is a promotion for the treasurer's Cash Dash program, which takes unclaimed property businesses and banks legally are required to turn over to the treasurer's office — inactive checking accounts, unpaid wages, bill overpayments and paid-up insurance policies — and returns it to the rightful owners.

SIU men's, women's basketball release 2011-12 schedules

SIU released its 2011-12 men's and women's basketball schedules this morning, unveiling a slate that features 16 home games for the men and 14 for the women this season. Men's basketball will open the season with four of their first six regular-season games at home. Included in those games are matchups with traditional rivals St. Louis Nov. 15 and Western Kentucky Dec. 7. The men also begin a new home-and-home series with SIUE when they host the Cougars Dec. 19.
