After a string of robberies in Carbondale involving suspects in Halloween masks, a suspect was taken into custody at about 3:45 p.m., on Monday, Oct. 14, according to the Carbondale Police Department Wednesday.

Arthur Eckles, 43, of Calumet City has been charged with armed robbery.

Police say officers responded to the Circle K convenience store, located at 1901 S. Illinois Ave., at about 12:32 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 13 for a report of an armed robbery. Upon arrival, officers learned two suspects entered the business a demanded money.

Police say both suspects were believed to be black males and both wearing Halloween masks. One suspect was said to be armed with a handgun. After obtaining an undisclosed amount of money and merchandise, the suspects ran away from the business.

During the course of the investigation, police say detectives developed information leading to the identification of one of the robbery suspects. Those detectives obtained a Jackson County arrested warrant to charge Eckles.

Eckles was located and arrested in Carbondale by members of the investigation task force. He was incarcerated in the Jackson County Jail and bond has been set at $500,000.

The investigation into this incident and the series of armed robberies which have occurred in Carbondale and Herrin since late July are continuing. All of the incidents are being investigated as related until it can be determined otherwise, police said.

The Carbondale and Herrin Police Departments are primarily being assisted in the investigations by the Illinois State Police, the Jackson and Williamson County Sheriff’s and State’s Attorney Offices, the SIU Police Department and the FBI.

The city of Carbondale and the city of Herrin previously partnered to offer a $3,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and the conviction of those responsible for the recent string of armed robberies in both cities.
