The Rainbow Café and Neighborhood Co-op Grocery will team up to raise funds for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) youth in the area with a fundraiser car wash from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17 in the Co-op parking lot.
The Rainbow Café serves as a social and support group for high school-age GLBT youth in Southern Illinois. The organization welcomes those youth who are questioning their orientation and youth members' heterosexual friends.
The organization also provides a safe space for GLBT youth to gather. Each week, meetings are held where youth partake in a variety of activities such as playing board or video games, cards, dominoes, watching movies, listening to music or just hanging out.
The Rainbow Cafe is sponsored by two Carbondale religious communities, the Church of the Good Shepherd and the Unitarian Fellowship. Youth from throughout Southern Illinois have contacted these congregations seeking answers, guidance and acceptance concerning their sexual orientation.
