Nine Southern Illinois McDonald’s restaurants operate by Short Enterprises, including the Carbondale Murdale location, will offer a healthier version of the popular Happy Meal by default to customers through the month of September.
Instead of automatically giving fries and soda in each happy meal, children will receive apple dippers and white milk, and parents will have to specifically ask for the higher calorie options. The promotion will be in effect at locations in Carbondale, Anna, Murphysboro, Du Quoin and Vienna.
“They were really excited about the idea,” said Angie Bailey, director of health education at the Jackson County Health Department, in a release.
With childhood obesity at epidemic levels, members of the Healthy Southern Illinois Delta Network are working with the executives to address this issue.
“Making the healthy choice the easy choice is the first step in the right direction," said Toni Kay Wright, registered dietitian with SIUC Head Start. “McDonald's is a trend-setter and has the potential to start something extremely beneficial to children and their health.”
