A handful of local girls were among the winners in July at the 2011 Illinois State Junior Horse Show in Springfield.
Candice Hill of Carbondale (third from left) won the pole bending championship for pony or horse (15- to 18-year-olds) and placed sixth in the barrel race. Virginia Smith of Murphysboro (fourth from left) won the English/Western trail class championship (15- to 18-year-olds).
Jessica Francis of Anna (first from left) won seventh place in the egg-n-spoon class (17- to 18-year-olds), and Alexis Rodgers of Ava (second from left) won secondnd place in the egg-n-spoon class (13- to 14-year-olds) and ninth place in conformation stock registered gelding class. Kassandra Bunch of Anna (fifth from left) won the Hunt Seat equitation over fences championship (10- to 14-year-olds), Traditional Hunter Under Saddle Championship (13- to 14-year-olds) and reserve champion for the hunter horse division.
More than 500 participants from across the state competed this year.
