A grant from the U.S. Department of Justice will help the Carbondale Police Department purchase new portable radios, Police Chief Jody O’Guinn said Tuesday.
The $16,802 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance grant was announced Aug. 29 by U.S. Rep. Jerry Costello, who added that nearby Marion also will receive almost $12,000. In a release, Costello stressed the need for police to have the best equipment possible.
“Our local law enforcement officials need the proper equipment to do their jobs and protect our communities,” said Costello, a former police officer. “I will continue to work to ensure that these funds are available for our region.”
