Varsity Center lays out ambitious plan

Peter Pirmann, president of the Varsity Center for the Arts, goes over renovation plans for the historic Carbondale theater during a presentation Aug. 19. The theater’s board is raising funds to complete a $3.5 million overhaul of the facility that would restore much of its exterior to how it appeared when it first opened in 1940. The majority of the funds to complete the work remain to be raised, but during the presentation, Allen Arnold presented Pirmann with a check for $25,000 — a gesture the Varsity’s directors hope will spur others in the community to donate.
