Authorities say a teenage driver who hit and killed a 70-year-old man who was walking down the middle of Rt. 51 Saturday evening is facing no criminal charges.

Police on Monday said charges are not pending against Shiann Raines, 18, of Du Quoin following the June 4 traffic crash that killed Lynn E. Easley, 70, of Elkville on Rt. 51 near Rude Cemetery Road.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office says the accident took place around 10:35 p.m. Saturday night and that Easley had been walking in the middle of the road near the Canadian National Railroad overpass at the time of the accident.

According to Jackson County Coroner Thomas Kupferer, an acquaintance told authorities that Easley had been at a bar earlier in the evening.

Kupferer said Easley had multiple serious injuries as a result of the accident and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Kupferer said a toxicology analysis of Easley should be completed in the coming weeks. Pettett Funeral home is handling the arrangements.

According to preliminary information, Easley’s body will be cremated, and burial of remains will be at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery near St. Louis.
