A Carterville man escaped remarkably uninjured after his pickup truck collided with a train just north of Carbondale.
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office reports they responded around 8:14 a.m. March 18 to a report of a train and vehicle crash on Helm Road, about a mile north of Carbondale city limits.
Deputies found that Jason Mulholland was operating a Ford F250 close to the railroad tracks when a southbound Canadian National train hit his truck. The brush guard of the vehicle reportedly made contact with the train’s “pilot,” which is used to deflect objects away from the train.
The brush guard was torn from the vehicle, and the truck rotated slightly, coming to rest a few feet from the train. Mulholland and the train’s engineer were uninjured but were taken to the hospital for precautionary measures.
