Two Carbondale men face a range of felony charges after an alleged armed robbery that occurred more than a week ago.
The state’s attorney’s office has charged Matthew A. Hamilton, 24, and Dontae J. Smith, 21, with a host of crimes after Carbondale Police began an investigation into a robbery that occurred Jan. 31.
Police say officers were on a foot patrol that Sunday in the 700 block of East Grand Avenue when a victim approached them and said someone had just pointed a gun at them. Officers immediately searched near the footbridge to the bicycle path located just east of the nearby businesses and encountered a suspect, identified as Smith, who allegedly fled but was captured following a short foot chase. Police say he was in possession of a handgun.
During the course of the investigation, officers learned three victims were walking toward the footbridge when Smith approached them, allegedly displayed the handgun and demanded personal property. A second suspect, later identified as Hamilton, allegedly battered one of the victims and stole property from the others.
Smith was charged with aggravated robbery, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, aggravated battery, two counts of aggravated assault and resisting a peace officer. Hamilton was charged with aggravated robbery, aggravated assault, felony possession of a weapon and aggravated battery in a public place. Both are due in court for preliminary hearings Feb. 25.
