The healing power of art

Jan Thomas of Murphysboro discusses on Friday the blown-glass array she created with her husband, Cameron Smith, at the still-under-construction SIH Cancer Center in Carterville. Their work, ‘Shawnee Garden,’ is on display inside the main entrance to the Cancer Center, which is on track to open in March. Last year, officials commissioned artwork to hang at the center that would promote nature and a sense of healing. ‘People do better when they’re in a relaxing, healing environment,’ SIH Director of Cancer Services Jennifer Badiu said. ‘We kind of planted an idea of what we were looking for. The focus is about the patient.’
